GRAMMY Award nominated, female-fronted rock act Fireflight tops the sales charts this week with its most recent studio release, NOW (3/6/12). The band boasts its highest sales debut to date, beating out previous first week numbers.
Coming in at No. 1 on multiple sales charts, including SoundScan’s Current Contemporary Christian Overall Chart, the Rock Alternative Chart as well as the iTunes Christian & Gospel Albums chart, Fireflight scanned more than 8,000 units its debut week. This is a career best for the group, who is enjoying success at radio as well with current single “Stay Close,” also No. 1 at Christian Rock radio this week.
Fireflight supported NOW’s release amid a flurry of positive reviews from outlets including:
iTunes: “...Fireflight proves masterful at delivering sanctified anthems with shout-along choruses.”
Crosswalk.com: “...the quintet continues to bring excellence to its Evanescence-meets-Skillet sound while making subtle stylistic tweaks that move Fireflight closer to an
even broader appeal.”
CCM Magazine: “Fireflight’s latest is as powerful and abbreviated as its title: NOW. Dawn Michele and company are back...”
Christianity Today: “...their [Fireflight’s] fourth full-length doesn't stray from the tried and true: blistering guitar anthems garnished with electronics, all edged toward the epic via the massive vocals of Dawn Michele.”
JesusFreakHideout.com: “...if you're looking for a diverse rock record with a softer side, NOW is well worth a listen.”
During street week, Fireflight also made an appearance on LeSEA Broadcasting’s original 30-minute music program “Live From Studio B.”
Asserting a new direction from the group’s previous record For Those Who Wait (2010), NOW calls listeners to move beyond their circumstances and take action. Produced by Jasen Rauch, NOW displays a new sonic focus for the band as well, built on lush electronic textures, futuristic moods and a more finely honed grasp of tender-to-titanic dynamics. Together the project’s hard-hitting message and sound make for an anthemic album.
Most recently, Fireflight wrapped the initial 20-city leg of its “Stay Close” tour, featuring BEC Recordings artist Rapture Ruckus and Delvin Williams. The band will pick up a second run of the tour, this time with Ashes Remain and 7eventh Time Down, mid-April. For a complete list of tour dates, visit www.fireflightrock.com.
GRAMMY Award nominated, female-fronted rock act Fireflight will release its fourth studio project, NOW, on March 6. The album is preceded by lead single, “Stay Close,” which topped the Billboard Christian Rock radio chart this week, while Fireflight gears up to support its new release with a “Stay Close” spring tour.
Asserting a new direction from the band’s previous record For Those Who Wait (2010), NOW calls listeners to move beyond their circumstances and take action. As guitarist Glenn Drennen explains, “We are not bound by our current condition because life is difficult or we have been hurt in the past. NOW points to God as our refuge who not only provides a place of safety and comfort, but who also challenges us to get outside our comfort zone...to join with something greater than ourselves.”
Produced by Jasen Rauch, NOW displays a new sonic focus for the band as well, built on lush electronic textures, futuristic moods and a more finely honed grasp of tender-to-titanic dynamics. Together the project’s hard-hitting message and sound make for an anthemic album. For example, the fist-pumping title track encourages listeners to quit making excuses, hiding in the shadows of previous pain, and to choose the path to freedom. In the same vein, melodic ballad “Rise Above” urges us to stop the cycle of victimization, overcome those things that have entangled us, and work toward a new tomorrow.
The record’s lead single “Stay Close,” which combines a techno beat backdrop with lyrics that address calling on God when our hearts and minds are stuck in dark times, is already finding success at radio. This week, the song climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Rock chart. Fireflight will follow the radio single with a “Stay Close” tour, additionally featuring BEC Recordings artist Rapture Ruckus and Delvin Williams. The 20-city spring leg will run through late March. With its stunning new 10-song collection, Fireflight exceeds expectations, following its 2008 breakout sophomore album Unbreakable, which delivered two No.1 singles at Rock and launched Fireflight’s music into new realms, including the NBC network, ESPN’s Winter X Games and voted Taco Bell’s “Best of the Beat” in 2009.
Dove-nominated “Artist of the Year,” Fireflight readies for the release of its third album this week, titled For Those Who Wait, on Feb. 9, as the dynamic first single “Desperate” hits No. 1 at Christian Rock radio, and moves up to No.14 on the CHR format. With its stunning new 10-song collection, Fireflight exceeds expectations, following its 2008 breakout sophomore album Unbreakable, which delivered two No.1 singles at Rock and launched Fireflight’s music into new realms, including the NBC network, ESPN’s Winter X Games and voted Taco Bell’s “Best of the Beat,” ultimately landing its prestigious Artist of the Year nomination at the Dove Awards in 2009.
While securing its fifth career No.1 song at radio, on the eve of its new album release, Fireflight also receives high marks as the editorial staff at leading music web site Jesusfreakhideout.com votes For Those Who Wait as its No.1 “most anticipated album of 2010,” topping the staff’s list of the 25 new projects “we’re plain stoked about.”
The site’s feature story includes staff reviews of Fireflight’s new project, saying:
“Upon hearing “Desperate,” one of the strongest tracks of their career, I couldn’t be anything but excited about the release of Fireflight’s third album. From the 30-second clips found on their MySpace site, the rest of it sounds just as promising as the first single. If the clips are any representation of what is to come with the record, it will surely be the best album of their career.” - Matthew Watson
“Fireflight dazzled us with 2008’s Unbreakable, proving their longevity and variability as CCM artists here to stay; their third outing, For Those Who Wait, will test the quintet on their reliability as a solid rock act, and we couldn't be more thrilled to see the unfolding result this Winter” - Roger Gelwicks
“With two very satisfying albums now on the band's resume and terrific songs paving the way for Fireflight’s third release, it doesn’t seem that mediocrity is in the band’s vocabulary.” - Nathaniel Schexnayder
With For Those Who Wait, Fireflight offers hard-rocking urgency and emotion, and unveils the band’s thickest groove yet, showcasing lead singer Dawn Michele’s powerful vocals. The album’s transparent lyrics continue a defining trait for Fireflight’s songwriting, issuing an awareness of God’s magnificence amidst personal weakness.
“This album is filled with even more personal stories of our own, our families, friends, and our fans,” relates Michele. “It’s our lives, our hearts, and our pain just poured out.” She adds, “For Those Who Wait is a maturation in understanding that sometimes you don’t appreciate why you’re on the path that you are. A lot of times, we get bogged down thinking about things that we’re waiting for. And when we do that, we totally miss out on what’s happening in-between now and our goal. God has times of waiting in our lives because He has something for us to learn. Hard things that happen, that throw us off of our plan, can become the most important things in our lives because God will take them and use them to shape our character and who we are.”
Musically, drummer Phee Shorb puts it, “For Those Who Wait sounds as good as I’ve always hoped we could sound.”
