The GRAMMY ® nominated group, Gungor, will release their latest record Ghosts Upon The Earth on September 20. The follow-up to the critically acclaimed Beautiful Things project was composed as a full narrative celebrating both the beauty and frailty of existence.

Using lyrical metaphors and allegories, along with unique time signatures and distinctive instruments, Ghosts Upon The Earth creates a musical odyssey for its listeners. Starting with a startling musical imagining of the creation of the universe and traversing subjects like the “fall of man” and the imperfection of our religious systems, the album leads the listener through a roller coaster of emotion that eventually leads us back to wonder and the thankfulness for this beautiful gift of life. Songs such as “Brother Moon,” “The Fall,” “You Are Beauty” and “Every Breath” are placed in purposeful order to tell a full story in the 12 track album.
Ghosts Upon The Earth takes its mysterious title from an allegory by C.S. Lewis titled The Great Divorce, in which the “ghosts” of a grey town encounter a heaven that is astonishingly, even painfully, real. “Sometimes it seems like the most real thing is what we can see and experience with our senses around us – this life, the tangible,” explains Michael Gungor. “Ideas like love, like God, these things sometimes feel more disconnected and ethereal, like that’s the ghostly realm. This is turning it on its head, recognizing that God is real, love is real, and we are the ghosts walking upon the earth, wanting to become more real.”
Known for their innovative live performance, Gungor will take to the road with fellow GRAMMY ® nominees David Crowder*Band alongside John Mark McMillan and Chris August for “The 7 Tour.” This final leg of shows will mark the last tour for the David Crowder*Band, and will hit over 30 major markets this fall. The pre-sale was such a success that in addition to the website initially crashing due to high traffic, nearly half of the dates sold out of their limited presale quantities seven months early.
“We're really excited about this tour,” comments David Crowder. “The line up is ridiculous! We're pretty sure this is going to be a really special outing.”

Formerly known as The Michael Gungor Band, the socially active, Denver-based foursome is comprised of Michael Gungor, his wife Lisa, as well as friends Brad Waller (guitar) and Josh Harvey (bass). Gungor hits the scene with a different perspective than most bands as the lead singer is perhaps best known for co-writing distinguished songs like “Friend of God” and “Say So” made famous by Israel Houghton. Nashville, Tenn. Dec. 3, 2009… Gungor, alongside Brash Music, will release Beautiful Things, a collection of songs birthed out of an honest journey of faith on February 16, 2010.
“This album is an expression of hope that God will make beautiful things out of the dust in our lives,” explains band front man Michael Gungor. “That God will somehow use us, use our obedience and love, our feeble human effort, and build Himself a kingdom.”
The music is not the only impressive thing about Gungor, as likewise the band is also incredibly involved in missions both in their hometown and abroad. Michael and his wife moved to Denver and eventually founded a community of believers called Bloom. The connection between worship and social justice became concrete in Denver with regular involvement with the homeless & needy of that area, and the outcome is evident on Beautiful Things. The group of four also headed to Africa in late September to further their involvement with the Mocha Club, an online community of people funding relief and development projects in Africa including clean water, education, women at risk, orphan care, children, HIV/AIDS and healthcare.
Ironically, most of the music is not directly about caring for the poor and ministering to widows and orphans. Instead, much of the album addresses the spiritual journey and the understanding of God that happens when we do these acts. The self-produced album’s credits, which reflect a loose and varying lineup, include Gungor’s wife Lisa on glockenspiel along with bandmates on horns, strings, banjos, a melodica, “foot-stomping mayhem” and Gungor’s now-signature toy piano.
Filled with unique instrumentation, the album features original songs such as “The Earth is Yours,” “Dry Bones” and “Call Me Out.” Israel Houghton even guests on a bass-driven romp called “Heaven.”
The band’s 2008 debut on Brash Music, Ancient Skies, garnered critical acclaim. Beautiful Things will be the band’s sophomore release, and the third CD release for Michael Gungor.
ATLANTA, Ga.–The critically-acclaimed Michael Gungor Band has signed with Atlanta-based Brash Music, and will release its debut CD for the label, Ancient Skies, on September 9. The project was self-produced, and features a set of thirteen songs either written or co-written by Gungor.
“I’m thrilled to be part of Brash Music,” said Gungor. “It’s exciting to share my passion about this project with them, and I’m looking forward to sharing this set of songs, which were written for my church, with a much larger audience.”
Although this is The Michael Gungor Band’s first project for Brash Music, the group has already achieved a level of success more commonly associated with a veteran artist. They have performed for more than a hundred thousand fans around the country, including this year’s Hillsong Conference in Sydney, Australia. The first single from Ancient Skies, “Giving It All,” is rapidly climbing the radio charts, and “Say So,” a song co-written by Gungor won a Dove Award earlier this year. Additionally, the group’s music has met with critical acclaim from national media outlets including Christianity Today.com, which named the band’s 2007 independent release as one of the year’s top worship projects.
“The Michael Gungor Band is a great fit for Brash,” said Steve Jones, president of Brash Music. “More than anything else, we’re looking for multi-faceted artists who are passionate about their music. This band has an excellent mix of strong songs and great musical talent, and we’re excited to partner with them on this album.”
About The Michael Gungor Band
The Denver, Colo.-based Michael Gungor Band has quickly become one of Christian music’s most exciting new groups. Led by front man Michael Gungor and his wife Lisa, the group also includes Brad Nyght (drums) and Brad Waller (bass). As a songwriter, Gungor has penned several well-known worship songs including “Friend of God,” a song co-written with Grammy Award winner Israel Houghton that has become one of the Top 20 songs sung in churches around the world according to CCLI.
The Michael Gungor Band is garnering widespread critical acclaim following last month’s release of their avant-garde worship debut, All I Need Is Here. Produced by Michael Rossback and Michael Gungor, the project has been named one of the “Favorite Worship Albums of 2007” by ChristianMusicToday.com.
“All I Need Is Here represents the first fruits of this new season in Gungor’s worship ministry, and a fine example of alternative worship music,” writes ChristianMusicToday.com’s Russ Breimeier. “…an excellent album that leads people to worship, if not a deeper understanding of what worship is all about.”
Additional review highlights for All I Need Is Here include:
“…a must-have for your personal collection. …Gungor is heavy hearted without being heavy handed in his songs of praise; you get the feel that his burdens are being worked through in grace and listeners are invited to connect but then turn their gaze above. And it’s all surrounded by some crazy rock ‘n roll—a pretty inspiring sum total.”
— Worship Leader Magazine
“…12 worship tracks written to stir listeners toward action. They are both message-driven and extremely artful, their exuberant creativity bringing The David Crowder Band to mind.”
— CMCentral.com
“The ballads on this album showcase Gungor’s sensitivity to the Spirit yet the uptempo tunes show his band’s musical depth. Fantastic!”
— CBNMusic.com
“All I Need Is Here is the next great worship disc.”
— Infuzemag.com
Characterized by creative rock and folk melodies, All I Need Is Here features 12 tracks, all written or co-written by Gungor. Thematically, the project encourages worship to extend beyond the walls of the Church to impact broken humanity.
