CD Review: Third Day - Christmas Offerings - Elizabeth Chan - 12/20/2006

Artist: Third Day
Album: Christmas Offerings
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Still riding the wave of their incredible, GRAMMY nominated album Wherever You Are, Essential recording act Third Day returns with the next installment of their Offerings worship series and their first Christmas album entitled Christmas Offerings. The thirteen-song collection consists of five live recordings and eight studio tracks – four of which are original contributions from the band. Blending their modern rock sound with the melodies of traditional Christmas carols, Third Day creates a beautiful balance of classic Christmas tunes!

Opening with the upbeat call of "O Come All Ye Faithful," Third Day sets the pace for the rest of the album with a worshipful and celebratory mood. This theme continues in their rendition of the popular carols "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "Joy to the World."

However, also heard on this album are four brand-new tracks from Third Day which were specifically written for Christmas Offerings. Although some listeners might be skeptical at first because the band is more well-known for penning modern Christian rock hits, original songs on the record which include "Born in Bethlehem," "Jesus, Light of the World," "Christmas Like a Child," and "Merry Christmas" show that they have the ability and are more than capable of skillfully writing for a wide array of situations – from modern rock hits to classic Christmas material.

Musically, the talent of Third Day is shown in tracks such as "O Holy Night" where the song begins calmly with simply guitars and vocals and later magnificently crescendos at the last chorus as lead singer, Mac Powell, unwaveringly sings "oh night divine"; then, similar to the calm intro, the song ends with a soft and beautiful piano instrumental piece. An example of Third Day’s musical diversity, on the other hand, is in their live, blues/swing version of another well-known carol "Away in a Manger," which was executed wonderfully by the guys.

If there is one main special thing that stands out about this album, though, it is the five live tracks. Not often do you find a Christmas album where live recordings are added which are not only done so well, but also complement the rest of the album so perfectly. But not known to always follow the trend, Third Day pulls this task off impeccably as the band invites the audience to join their voices in one accord and sing along.

All in all, Christmas Offerings is a solid, consistent, and excellent offering from Third Day. It is sure to be a favorite during this holiday season, but is also a great record to add to any Christian music fan’s collection!
