In the style of This Beautiful Republic, Dizmas attempts the difficult balance of meaningful ballads and cut-loose rock anthems with an edge. The guitar sounds and original drum licks get your head bopping from the first track. I also applaud a great ending to the album reminding us that the sun keeps shining no matter what.
In between a great start and finish however, I move from grooving to grimacing. For me, Dizmas release is properly titled and seemingly full of “Tension.” There are a number of melodic surprises, memorable licks and crowd-pleasing choruses even though I find an occasional whine where there should be singing.
But give me a minute and maybe I grow to like it. While I’m waiting, I’ll loosen my collar and jam to fast-paced fun on “See Daylight” and “Until You Rescued Me.”
If you’re a veteran to Dizmas, you’ll notice a change in style from previous releases. However, if you are new to their music like me, you may want to invest some time to get to know and appreciate these talented young guys. Remember: genius is rarely spotted from afar. Joe
