With a new label, the return of Derek Webb, and the return of creative freedom, Caedmon’s Call offers its first project on INO Records, Overdressed. With less emphasis being placed on production, the record has a very organic sound that is driven by acoustic guitars, percussion, and vocal melodies. The use of electric guitars and keys are very tasteful and perfectly placed. Cliff and Danielle Young, Andrew Osenga, and Derek Webb all share the vocal duties. Derek and his wife Sandra McCracken wrote three songs for the album with the rest being written by Andrew and Randal Goodgame.
The album opener is Webb’s “Trouble” which is where the album’s title, Overdressed, is derived from. The melody is strong, but it is the way that Josh Moore on keys and Osenga on the electric guitar play off of each other that grabs you and prepares you for the rest of the album. The first great moment comes from the Osenga sung “Expectations”. The song distinguishes the reality of the Christian walk from the way it is portrayed on roadside billboards. The instrumental build in the between verse sections of this song is worth the cost of the album. The first single, “There Is A Reason”, is sung by Cliff and it dives into the often said, but not-so-often thought about cliché that all things happen for a reason. On the Sandra McCracken written “Share In The Blame”, Derek and Danielle sing this duet that is a call to stop playing life as the victim and to take a look in the mirror. What is probably the darkest sounding song on the album is “Hold the Light” that Osenga wrote which describes the way a community of believers can hold up one of its members through struggles of everyday life and doubt we all sometimes feel. The sound is reminiscent of his song “House of Mirrors” on his second full length solo album The Morning. “Two Weeks In Africa” is the song most reminiscent of Share The Well on the album. It deals with the spiritual high a person can feel after being on a mission trip and how quickly that trip can be forgotten.
Overdressed is a breath of fresh air to Caedmon’s fans both new and old.
